Richard Dickey was born in Columbus, Indiana, only miles from the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
His uncle, Larrett Crocket, had finished ninth at Indy in 1953, and took Rookie of the Year honors, just
the year before Richard was born. His family had gone to Indy 500’s and Sprint Car races his whole life.
Richard took up go-kart racing as a teenager, while working at a NAPA store to make money. He raced
sprint karts on the dirt track at the local county fairgrounds and road races on the streets of small local
towns in Indiana. The machinist at the NAPA store, Don Knulf, happened to be the engine builder for
Crocket, back in his Indy days, and Richard began learning the intricacies of engine building.
He then hooked up with the Columbus Sports Car Club through Randy Hall, a long time member of the
CSCC, to run rallies and solo speed events. There he met Ray Steins, the owner of Autowheel, a foreign
car parts supply business that Ray ran out of his garage. At that time, Richard was driving a Triumph
Spitfire and Ray introduced him to Dick Owen, who raced a Spitfire in SCCA competition. He learned
about suspensions, made changes to his car, and became virtually unbeatable in the solo speed events.
Richard went to Purdue University where he resurrected the defunct Purdue Auto Club, with the help of
Rick Kosdrosky, a fellow student , Triumph owner, and road racing associate to this day. He built and
raced specialized Purdue Grand Prix go-karts and won the coveted Best Engineered Kart award. After
college, Richard took a job in the nuclear engineering and construction field, in Texas, and proceeded to
start his sports car road racing career . Since then Richard has developed a racing business of his own,
Dickey Racing, and has amassed nearly 100 track records and wins at 34 tracks across the country.
For Richard, a 61-year-old independent businessman, racing remains his first love. “I went college to get
a degree and make enough money to race. I’ve put my whole life into racing. The excitement and
satisfaction of winning is what makes all the work worthwhile. As four time Indy winner Johnny
Rutherford said, “Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.”, and I believe in that too”.
“The excitement and challenge is just part of the satisfaction I get from racing”, Richard said, “It makes
me feel good that people think enough of my ability to spend their time and money working in my
support. The people I meet and the camaraderie of the sport are what inspire me to put out that 110%
in takes to win”
